Shreveport Police continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting deaths of three adults and one juvenile and injuries of seven others, during an Independence Day celebration in north Shreveport.
On July 4, 2023, at 11:40 p.m., Shreveport Police Patrol Officers responded to the 2500 block of Jones Mabry and the 2000 block of Pearl Street in reference to a shooting. Arriving officers were barraged by crowds of frightened people fleeing from the intersection asking officers for help as there were multiple people shot at that location. Police officers and Shreveport Fire medics made their way through the large crowd and began locating the injured and getting them to ambulances for transport to the hospital. Two men were pronounced deceased on the scene, and at least four other victims were transported to Ochsner LSU Health to be treated for gunshot injuries. One man died a short time after arriving at the hospital and another individual remains in critical condition. The others had non- life-threatening injuries. Many others were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries, all related to the incident.
Officers secured the crime scene and detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit were summoned. Detectives attempted to locate witnesses and video while Crime Scene Investigators combed the scene for evidence. The area had dense vegetation making efforts to recover evidence very difficult in the dark. CSIU and investigators worked through the night and into the morning hours and a fourth person was located deceased in the area just before 9:30 a.m.
The decedents have been identified as 22-year-old Moriz Aziz, 19-year-old Jarike Dorsey, 24-year-old Demorie Williams, and 17-year-old Syncere Brown.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an argument between two groups of men and believe there were multiple people firing shots. Handgun and rifle casings were located throughout the area. The motive has not yet been determined. Eleven citizens sustained injuries or were killed during the incident.
