The House of Representatives has passed H.R. 35, known as The Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act. This legislation aims to address crimes committed by illegal aliens who evade federal officers while driving. It was named in honor of Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez Jr., who died in December 2022 during a pursuit near Mission, Texas.

Speaker Johnson commented on the passing of the bill, stating: “In December 2022, Border Patrol Agent Raul Gonzalez Jr. tragically died in the line of duty while chasing down illegal aliens who were fleeing the scene of a crime. His ultimate sacrifice is a stark reminder of the dangers our brave law enforcement officers face every day to protect our borders." He added that "this bill delivers a strong message: those who cross our borders illegally and jeopardize the safety of our officers will face severe criminal and immigration penalties."

The legislation stipulates that any illegal alien involved in evading Border Patrol will be permanently barred from obtaining legal immigration status in the United States. Furthermore, individuals participating in high-speed chases with law enforcement will face significant federal criminal penalties. The bill also includes increased penalties for cases where evasion results in serious injury or death.

Agent Gonzalez served his country for over ten years before his untimely death following an ATV crash during a pursuit.
