Speaker Johnson addressed the media at a House Republican Leadership conference, sharing his views on key legislative priorities. He highlighted the significance of the Senate budget resolution amendment, asserting its role in enabling the drafting of consequential legislation. According to Johnson, "The budget resolution is not the law. All this does is it allows us to continue the process... begin drafting the actual legislation."
Johnson confirmed that the Senate amendment did not alter the reconciliation instructions already established, affirming the Republican commitment to maintaining essential program protections while pursuing historic spending reductions. "Reconciliation will be a collaborative process between the House and Senate," he noted.
Focusing on the Trump agenda, Johnson emphasized the importance of acting swiftly to bring relief to American families. "Republicans have a historic, once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver relief to hard working families," he stated, pointing out potential crises, including a looming debt limit, decreasing border security resources, and impending tax increases that necessitate prompt legislative action.
Johnson also discussed the SAVE Act, a proposal requiring proof of citizenship to vote, garnering significant bipartisan support among the public. "Polling shows that nearly 90% of the American people believe that proof of citizenship should be required to vote," he noted. Despite this public sentiment, Johnson anticipated resistance from Democratic lawmakers, attributing their opposition to attempts to protect noncitizen voting rights. "What they're trying to do is protect the ability of noncitizens to participate in our elections," Johnson asserted.
As the week progresses, House Republicans are expected to advance these initiatives, fulfilling their stated objectives.
