On Monday, Speaker Mike Johnson appointed Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. This organization operates within the executive branch and focuses on serving at-risk children and youth.
Speaker Johnson expressed his support for Sheriff Whittington's appointment, stating, "I am honored to appoint my good friend, Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. For the last 14 years, Sheriff Whittington has done exceptional work to make Bossier Parish a safe and thriving community for families." He further praised Whittington's leadership in law enforcement, noting that it has earned national recognition. "I have no doubt he will bring invaluable expertise to the Council. I am confident Sheriff Whittington will represent Bossier Parish and the State of Louisiana with distinction."
The Coordinating Council was established by the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 1974. It assists with cross-agency coordination of juvenile delinquency programs across federal, state, and local levels. The council consists of twenty-three members, including thirteen from federal agencies. The Attorney General serves as its Chair. Among its members are ten juvenile justice practitioners from across the nation, with only three appointed by the Speaker of the House.
Sheriff Whittington began his career as a patrol deputy in 1988 before being elected as Sheriff of Bossier Parish in 2011. His achievements include graduating from the FBI National Academy, serving as Chairman of the Louisiana D.A.R.E. Advisory Board, President of Louisiana's Sheriff's Association, and receiving national recognition for his commitment to community safety.
Sheriff Whittington’s appointment has been recorded in the Congressional Record of the United States House of Representatives.
