This afternoon, Speaker Johnson participated in a conference organized by Punchbowl News, engaging in a fireside chat with reporter Jake Sherman. The discussion spanned various topics, including government funding, budget reconciliation, the DOGE effort, and the priorities of House Republicans for the 119th Congress.
Regarding budget reconciliation and the permanency of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Speaker Johnson emphasized an aggressive timeline: "I've put this on a very aggressive timetable... we want to get this at the president's desk for a signature by the end of April or early May." He highlighted the importance of market stability and providing certainty to small business owners about future tax rates.
Addressing the DOGE effort, Johnson outlined a three-step process: "There's a three-step process. The way I summarize it is, we have to qualify, and then quantify, and then codify what is happening." He noted that data is being shared online via the DOGE website and mentioned collaboration with federal agencies like the Office of Management and Budget.
On priorities for House Republicans in the 119th Congress, Johnson stressed fiscal year 2026 budgeting: "We’ve got to get right to FY26 budgeting... I believe we're going to be able to restore regular order." He expressed optimism about completing appropriations bills on time and avoiding continuing resolutions.
