This morning, Speaker Johnson addressed the media at the House Republican Leadership press conference, focusing on President Trump's upcoming joint address to Congress and critiquing the Democrats' approach to governance.
Speaker Johnson emphasized that President Trump's appearance is not a State of the Union address, as it is being delivered earlier than usual. He stated, "Tonight, as was mentioned, it's five years after President Trump’s last State of the Union address. This is a joint address to Congress, not a state of the union... But this president is working so quickly."
Johnson praised President Trump's achievements since taking office. He noted several areas where he believes progress has been made: "The president has already notched impressive lists of wins in so many categories... securing the border so well that border crossings have hit an historic low... bringing investments in jobs back to the US, unleashing American energy... and cutting waste, fraud, abuse."
He also commented on what he perceives as a lack of leadership and coherent messaging from Congressional Democrats. According to Johnson, "Polling continues to show that the American people are with us on the issues." He claimed that Republicans are restoring common sense in governance and contrasted this with Democratic policies which he described as supporting wasteful spending and opposing tax cuts for working families.
Johnson concluded by asserting that while House Democrats struggle with their messaging, House Republicans will continue their efforts to serve the country.
