This morning, Speaker Johnson addressed the House Republican Leadership press conference, discussing collaboration with President Trump and his initial days back in office. He highlighted two bills set for passage this week: the Fix Our Forests Act and the Born Alive Survivors Protection Act.
Speaker Johnson praised President Trump's early actions in office, stating, "What came out of the meetings of the White House yesterday was that we're going to do this in a bicameral manner. You're going to have the Senate Republicans and House Republicans working together to advance the America first agenda, and we will deliver now." He further noted several executive orders issued by President Trump within his first 48 hours.
Johnson criticized California's leadership regarding forest management, emphasizing the importance of the Fix Our Forests Act. He stated, "The reason this is so important is because we see what happened in California, the lack of leadership there." The bipartisan bill aims to restore forest health and enhance community resilience against wildfires.
On the Born Alive Survivors Protection Act, Johnson framed it as a matter of human dignity and ethics. He posed a question regarding medical care for infants born alive during attempted abortions: "If a child is born alive...should the doctor try to keep that child alive?" Johnson expressed hope that Democrats would support the bill after 210 voted against it previously.
