On January 3, 2025, the House of Representatives voted to reelect Speaker Mike Johnson as the 56th Speaker of the House on the first day of the 119th Congress. Following his election, Speaker Johnson addressed his colleagues in a speech on the House floor.
"But in recent months, we have witnessed something happening, something that’s really remarkable. A political moment in modern history. A groundswell of Americans from every state, race, and religion who now demand that we put the interests of Americans first again. And we will," stated Speaker Johnson during his remarks. "This is a powerful new coalition of our country; it’s a coalition that insists that we purge the policies of ‘America last’ and we bury them in the graveyard of history’s mistakes."
Speaker Johnson expressed gratitude for his reelection and acknowledged the support from his colleagues: "Thank you, Leader Jeffries, and all of our treasured colleagues here in the House." He also mentioned personal acknowledgments including family members present at the event.
Addressing recent events in Louisiana following a terrorist attack in New Orleans which resulted in multiple casualties and injuries, he requested a moment of silence for victims.
In his speech, Speaker Johnson highlighted historical milestones achieved by America over its 250-year history. He emphasized America's unique position globally: "We are explicitly American... We don’t try to be like other nations."
Johnson outlined core principles he believes essential to American conservatism: individual freedom, limited government, rule of law, peace through strength, fiscal responsibility, free markets, and human dignity.
Speaker Johnson indicated plans for legislative action including securing borders with coordination from President Trump and addressing inflation issues. He called for investments to bolster defense capabilities amid what he described as "the most dangerous moment since World War II."
He concluded by reflecting on Thomas Jefferson's prayer for unity and leadership integrity: “Let me just read you that prayer... That was Thomas Jefferson's prayer.” Reaffirming commitment to American values underlined by bipartisan cooperation.
The session concluded with optimism about future congressional achievements as members prepared to take their oaths.
