Tonight, Speaker Johnson participated in an interview with Bret Baier on Fox News' Special Report. The discussion covered several topics, including the budget reconciliation process, the Department of Government Efficiency, government funding, and the upcoming Speakership election in January.
During the interview, Speaker Johnson emphasized the urgency of completing the budget early in January to facilitate the reconciliation process. He stated, "Look, everyone is absolutely determined to get the budget done very quickly right out of the gates." Johnson highlighted that this process allows for policy changes with a simple majority in the Senate. He noted that there might be at least two reconciliation packages and discussed where tax considerations might fit into these plans.
Johnson also addressed priorities such as border security and energy policy. He mentioned efforts to prevent a significant tax increase by extending current tax cuts and dismantling what he referred to as "the deep state," linking it to initiatives under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Regarding DOGE, Johnson described it as a chance for substantial change. He recently met with committee chairs involved in budgeting and government infrastructure. "Great productive discussion and interaction," he remarked about these meetings. Johnson expressed confidence in executing these plans with meticulous planning and praised individuals like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy for their expertise in running efficient organizations.
On government funding, Johnson acknowledged a preference against continuing resolutions but recognized their practicality given current circumstances. "In principle, we don't like continuing resolutions," he said, adding that they allow for key decisions when new governmental leadership is established next year.
Finally, concerning the Speakership election, Johnson expressed confidence in his party's unity. "Look, we have a unified conference," he stated. He anticipated a smooth transition and election process due to pre-established cohesion within his team.
