Speaker Johnson has released a statement following the publication of the final report by the bipartisan House Task Force investigating the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump. The task force was established with three primary objectives: to understand what went wrong on the day of the incident, ensure accountability, and prevent future failures.
"The House assigned the bipartisan Task Force with three goals: understand what went wrong on that tragic day that killed an American patriot and almost cost President Trump his life, ensure accountability, and prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again," stated Speaker Johnson.
Over five months, the task force examined the events in Butler, Pennsylvania, identifying significant shortcomings within the Secret Service. Their findings highlighted issues in planning, execution, and leadership that suggested a need for cultural reform within the agency.
"It is now incumbent on Acting Director Ronald Rowe to enact as many of the 32 recommendations made by the Task Force as possible," continued Speaker Johnson. He also emphasized Congress's role in reviewing five legislative recommendations aimed at enhancing security measures for high-profile protectees.
The report includes 37 recommendations intended to improve presidential security protocols. Speaker Johnson noted Congress's commitment to collaborating with the incoming Trump Administration to implement these changes effectively.
"We can never again experience such a dangerous and deadly security failure," he concluded.
The full report detailing all recommendations from the House Task Force is available for public review.
