Speaker Johnson spoke to the media before a meeting with Elon Musk, Vivek Ramaswamy, and Republican members and senators. The focus was on discussing priorities for the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
"This is an important day. It's the beginning of a journey," said Speaker Johnson. He emphasized the need for a more efficient government, stating, "We have long lamented the size and scope of the government... And the taxpayers deserve better."
Johnson highlighted Musk and Ramaswamy's roles in this initiative, noting their achievements as innovators. "Both of these gentlemen have run very successful organizations," he remarked.
The initial meeting involved key figures from both houses of Congress who manage governmental finances and structure. This gathering marks the start of ongoing discussions aimed at improving government efficiency.
Johnson indicated that further details would be sparse as this was merely a brainstorming session. However, he assured that significant changes are forthcoming in Washington.
The effort to streamline government operations will involve cooperation across party lines. Johnson acknowledged bipartisan interest: "Over the last 24 or 48 hours... you've seen a number of our Democrat colleagues... say, ‘you know what? Sign me up.’"
