As Washington anticipates the transition to a new administration, House Republican leaders and committee chairs have formally requested that all Biden-Harris Administration cabinet secretaries retain pertinent documents and communications. This request comes as part of preparations for the incoming Trump Administration.
The letter, signed by Speaker Johnson along with other Republican leaders, emphasizes the importance of adhering to statutory record retention requirements during this transition period. "As we begin preparation for a new Trump Administration and new Congress, we fully expect your cooperation in a smooth transition of power," the letter states. It further highlights the necessity of complying with federal record retention laws, specifically mentioning the Federal Records Act.
House Committees have conducted extensive oversight on various issues during the 118th Congress. These include border policies, the Afghanistan withdrawal, alleged suppression of free speech through social media collaboration, and accusations against federal agencies concerning political bias. The committees also addressed antisemitism in universities attributed to Democratic leadership.
The letter indicates that House Committees will persist in seeking compliance with existing subpoenas as they conclude their work in this Congress. Furthermore, there is an indication that some subpoenas might be reissued as oversight efforts continue into the 119th Congress.
The Republican leadership expressed gratitude in advance for compliance with their request.
