In a significant move, Speaker Johnson has issued a statement following the House's approval of Rep. Chuck Edwards’ Equal Representation Act. This proposed legislation mandates the inclusion of a citizenship question in the decennial census and necessitates the exclusion of noncitizens from the population count used to determine each state’s U.S. House representation and electors.

Speaker Johnson expressed his viewpoint on this matter, stating, “The only influence illegal immigrants should have in U.S. elections is to motivate American citizens to vote out the politicians who allowed them in. We should not reward states and cities that violate federal immigration laws and maintain sanctuary policies with increased Congressional representation.” He further added, “Common sense dictates that only American citizens should be counted for electoral apportionment and the Equal Representation Act ensures that.”
