Caddo Parish, LA – Caddo Parish Juvenile Services and Juvenile Court, along with other partnering organizations will host the South-Central U.S. Human Trafficking Conference on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at 8:30am at Louisiana State University-Shreveport (University Center). This year’s event will feature human trafficking survivor and national advocate Cyntoia Brown-Long. The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is encouraged.
The annual conference will cover a variety of issues, including human trafficking in Louisiana and the complex trauma that accompanies it, warning signs and red flags and information from service providers for prevention, intervention and treatment for victims and survivors.
Cyntoia Brown-Long, a survivor of human trafficking, was arrested at age 16 for the murder of a man who solicited her for sex. She was prosecuted as an adult and subsequently sentenced to life in prison. She was granted clemency in 2019 by former Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam, after serving 15 years of her life sentence. She is now the CEO and Founder of the Foundation for Justice, Freedom and Mercy, where she works to give a voice to victims of sexual violence and shares her story with groups across the country. She has been interviewed and featured in national media outlets such as NBC Nightly News, CBS News, the Today Show, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, The Breakfast Club, Essence and the Washington Post. She is a NAACP Award nominee and published author.
In addition to the keynote address by Brown-Long, the event will feature expert speakers, including Dr. Dana Hunter, Director of the newly formed Governor’s Office of Human Trafficking Prevention, and the Honorable Ronald C. Gathe, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Louisiana.
The event is sponsored by Caddo Parish Juvenile Court / Caddo Parish Juvenile Services; Caddo Parish Commission; Community Foundation of North Louisiana; Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund Pelican Center - Court Impact Programs and The FREE Coalition to End Human Trafficking in Louisiana.
