Speaker Johnson expressed concerns on Tax Day regarding potential tax increases if Congress does not extend the tax cuts enacted in 2017 under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. He warned in an op-ed that the expiration of these cuts would result in “the largest middle-class tax hike in history” by next year.

Johnson stated that, without intervention from Congress, Americans could face a 22% tax increase on average. This would translate to a $1,700 tax increase for an average family of four and a significant reduction in the Child Tax Credit for 40 million households. He further highlighted broader economic implications, noting that over 26 million businesses might experience a federal tax rate rise to 43%, risking nearly six million jobs and potentially reducing the gross domestic product by $1 trillion.

Johnson acknowledged recent efforts by House Republicans to address the issue. “The budget resolution we passed lays the groundwork to extend the 2017 tax cuts and rein in wasteful spending so Americans can keep more of their hard-earned money,” he indicated.

The op-ed countered critiqued claims by describing them as misleading. He referred to findings from the Tax Policy Center, stating that over 90% of middle-income earners saw a tax decrease following the 2017 cuts, which led to job creation and income growth. “Americans experienced the greatest economy under President Trump because we followed a simple formula for success,” Johnson claimed, emphasizing domestic energy production, regulation cuts, and reduced government size and scope.

He concluded by advocating for a policy shift away from “Bidenomics” and affirmed that “our best days are still ahead of us” through collaboration between Congressional Republicans and the Trump Administration. The focus, he asserted, should be on maintaining low taxes for American families and business sectors.
