Speaker Johnson addressed the ongoing LA riots and criticized Governor Gavin Newsom’s leadership during a House Republican Leadership press conference. He advocated for the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill, which aims to provide resources to federal law enforcement officers and discussed strategies for reducing the national deficit.
In his remarks on the LA riots, Speaker Johnson highlighted what he sees as a chaotic situation exacerbated by past policies. “While the rioters have been burning police cars and looting storefronts and physically assaulting law enforcement officers, it’s important to remember how we got to this point,” he stated. He attributed part of the problem to sanctuary states like California that offer protections and benefits to illegal immigrants.
Johnson praised former President Trump’s efforts in immigration control, describing them as “bold visionary leadership” that resulted in significant deportation efforts. He contrasted these actions with what he described as Democratic politicians’ attempts to undermine law enforcement efforts.
Regarding Governor Newsom’s leadership, Johnson criticized him for failing to maintain order in California. “Time and time again, innocent hardworking Americans have been harmed by the failed leadership of Democrat governors like Gavin Newsom,” he said, supporting President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard.
The One Big Beautiful Bill was presented as a solution for bolstering federal law enforcement agencies such as ICE and border patrol. The bill proposes hiring 10,000 new ICE agents, providing bonuses for current agents, expanding detention capacity, and funding deportations. Johnson argued that while Republicans support law enforcement through this bill, Democrats oppose it by defending illegal immigrants.
On fiscal matters, Johnson outlined a multi-pronged approach to reducing the deficit. The strategy includes cutting wasteful spending through rescission packages and utilizing revenues from tariffs. He emphasized that “The One Big Beautiful Bill is going to reduce spending by over $1.6 trillion.”
