House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Apr. 15 that the Working Families Tax Cuts have resulted in lower taxes, larger refunds, and more money for American families this tax season. Johnson spoke at a press conference with House Republicans on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, joined by citizens who have benefited from new tax provisions such as No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, an expanded Child Tax Credit, and other measures.

Johnson said, “Every single Democrat in Congress, every single Democrat, voted to raise your taxes. Every Republican standing behind me and all the rest voted for the Working Families Tax Cuts so Americans can keep more of their own hard-earned money.”

He emphasized that these changes are permanent: “Thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts, Americans in all 50 states are benefiting from taxes that are lower and simpler and fairer for their families. This legislation is so revolutionary because it is permanent. That’s a big thing.” He added that it is the first time since 1986 that Americans’ tax rates have been permanently reduced.

Johnson cited figures such as a $10,000 increase in annual take-home pay for typical working families and an average tax cut of 15% for those earning between $15,000 and $80,000 annually. The average refund has reached $3,400 this year. He attributed these results to efforts to simplify the tax code and reduce burdens on families.

The Speaker contrasted Republican policies with those of Democrats: “While Republicans are cutting taxes for families for lower- and middle-class hardworking Americans, Democrats are trying to raise those taxes… It’s common sense versus crazy.”

Mike Johnson has represented Louisiana’s 4th district in Congress since replacing John Fleming in 2017 according to Ballotpedia. Before his time in Congress he served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017 according to official records. Born in Shreveport in 1972 and now living in Benton according to his congressional biography, Johnson earned both his BA (1995) and JD (1998) from Louisiana State University according to Vote Smart.
