This morning, Speaker Johnson addressed the anniversary of an assassination attempt on President Trump during the weekly House Republican Leadership press conference. He highlighted how constituents plan to utilize savings from the recently passed One Big Beautiful Bill.
Reflecting on the event that occurred a year ago in Butler, Pennsylvania, Johnson said, “One year ago, Sunday, on that field in Butler, Pennsylvania, an assassin nearly took the life of President Trump.” He emphasized its significance as a turning point in American history and praised Trump’s resilience and subsequent achievements.
Johnson noted various accomplishments under the unified Republican government over the past six months. These include reduced gas prices, improved job reports, record stock market highs, and low border encounters. Additionally, NATO partners have increased their defense spending commitments. The One Big Beautiful Bill was signed into law on July 4th and is described by Johnson as “the most consequential transformational legislation ever considered in our lifetimes.”
The bill is expected to benefit citizens across America. Johnson shared responses from constituents in Louisiana’s fourth congressional district regarding their plans for utilizing savings from the bill. Responses varied from opening retirement accounts to home repairs and contributing to emergency funds.
Johnson reiterated that these savings belong to the people: “It’s their money. It’s not the government’s money and we’re delighted to give it back to them.”
