This morning, Speaker Johnson expressed support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers following a meeting in Chicago. In an interview with Bill Hemmer on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, Johnson discussed the efforts of House Republicans to provide ICE with necessary resources through what he referred to as the One Big Beautiful Bill.
During his visit to ICE offices in Chicago, Johnson stated: “We came here to make sure that these brave men and women that serve in ICE, who are protecting our communities and upholding federal law, I want to make sure that they know that Republicans have their back.” He highlighted the rise in assaults on ICE officers by 413% recently and contrasted Republican support for law enforcement with Democratic opposition.
Johnson also spoke about the impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill on immigration and deportations: “I can tell you that every Republican in Congress, in the House and Senate, are completely supportive of this idea that we’ve got to give more resources.” He referenced President Trump’s election success due to his stance on illegal immigration. Johnson noted Tom Homan’s statement about recent border detentions being at a historic low and emphasized the need for resources, including a $10,000 bonus for frontline personnel.
Discussing additional resources needed by ICE from Congress, Johnson criticized local leadership: “They’ve got a very difficult job here in this deep blue territory with a mayor who is on the wrong side of the law.” He argued for more personnel and facilities to aid ICE’s mission of removing dangerous individuals from the country.
Johnson reiterated commitment towards securing borders and supporting enforcement measures through legislative efforts.
