Speaker Johnson appeared on NBC’s Meet the Press to discuss the One Big Beautiful Bill, aiming to clarify misconceptions about its purpose and impact. According to Speaker Johnson, “The One Big Beautiful Bill is a big first step to provide relief for the American people, to give everybody more take home pay, more money in their pocket, and to change the trajectory of the country.” He emphasized that this bill is part of a series of measures supported by President Trump.
Addressing concerns from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) regarding economic growth projections, Speaker Johnson argued that past tax cuts and deregulation efforts have historically led to significant economic expansion. He stated, “We literally brought about the greatest economy in the history of the world,” referring to similar initiatives during Trump’s previous administration.
On Medicaid reforms within the bill, Speaker Johnson clarified that there are no cuts planned. Instead, he described efforts as strengthening Medicaid by reducing fraud and misuse while ensuring resources are available for those truly in need. He mentioned, “We’re reducing fraud, waste, and abuse that is rampant in Medicaid.”
Regarding accusations of tax cuts favoring millionaires, Speaker Johnson dismissed these claims as Democratic talking points. He explained that many individuals benefiting from tax changes are small business owners who contribute significantly to job creation. “The biggest beneficiaries of this will be low and middle income Americans,” he said.
Speaker Johnson reiterated commitments made during President Trump’s campaign concerning permanent tax reductions for all Americans.
