This morning in Washington, Speaker Johnson addressed several pressing issues during the weekly House Republican Leadership press conference. He discussed a recent altercation involving House Democrats and ICE agents, budget reconciliation efforts, and allegations of misinformation by House Democrats regarding Medicaid.
Johnson criticized three Democrat members of Congress for their involvement in a physical confrontation with ICE officers outside the Delaney Hall Detention Center in New Jersey. “What a spectacle that was, what a horrible display for our children to see,” he stated. He further condemned the Democrat leadership’s response, quoting Hakeem Jeffries: “We will never bend the knee.” Johnson questioned this stance and expressed concern over Democrats’ demands to shut down detention facilities housing violent criminals.
The Speaker emphasized the Republican stance on immigration enforcement: “Republicans want to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens. Democrats want to empty the jails.” He also noted that US Attorney Alina Habba is investigating the incident.
On budget reconciliation, Johnson described it as one of Congress’s most consequential pieces of legislation. The bill aims to be fiscally responsible by slashing taxes, restoring energy dominance, securing borders, and reducing wasteful spending. “We’re still on target to hit that Memorial Day deadline,” he assured.
Johnson accused House Democrats of spreading falsehoods about Medicaid changes within the proposed legislation. He claimed they released misleading reports before bill details were finalized: “They included policies that are not even in the legislation.” Johnson urged media outlets to challenge these claims and focus on factual reporting.
