Speaker of the House Mike Johnson released a statement regarding recent U.S. military action in Venezuela. Johnson stated that he had spoken with Secretary Rubio and Secretary Hegseth about the situation, and noted that President Trump would address the nation at 11am ET.
“Today’s military action in Venezuela was a decisive and justified operation that will protect American lives,” Johnson said. He attributed responsibility for “the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans” to Nicolas Maduro, citing years of illegal drug trafficking and cartel activity allegedly facilitated by Maduro. Johnson added, “crimes for which he’s been properly indicted in U.S. courts and an arrest warrant duly issued — and today he learned what accountability looks like.”
Johnson continued, “President Trump is putting American lives first, succeeding where others have failed, and under his leadership the United States will no longer allow criminal regimes to profit from wreaking havoc and destruction on our country.” He also indicated that the administration was working to schedule briefings for members of Congress as they return to Washington next week.
He concluded by expressing gratitude toward U.S. military personnel: “Our brave military personnel who executed a precise, successful operation deserve our gratitude and congratulations.”
Mike Johnson has represented Louisiana’s 4th congressional district since 2017, following his service in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 2015 to 2017. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1972 and currently resides in Benton. Johnson holds both a BA (1995) and JD (1998) from Louisiana State University.
