This morning, Speaker Johnson appeared on Bloomberg TV’s Bloomberg Surveillance with Annmarie Hordern to address misconceptions about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He discussed the collaborative efforts between the House and Senate to finalize the bill for President Trump’s approval by July 4th.
Johnson addressed misinformation surrounding the bill, stating, “I think there’s a lot of confusion out there about what the legislation is, and there’s certainly a lot of misinformation. The Democrats have been engaged in this strategy for many, many weeks and months.” He emphasized that the legislation took over a year to develop with input from 11 different committees in the House. Johnson assured that it aims to deliver historic tax relief and savings.
He warned of potential economic consequences if the bill is not passed, noting that without it, “the tax cuts of 2017, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, will expire at the end of December. Every American will receive the largest tax increase in US history all at once.” Johnson explained that making these tax cuts permanent and implementing pro-growth policies would stimulate economic activity by reducing wasteful spending, taxes, and regulations.
Regarding budget reconciliation versus appropriations, Johnson clarified: “I think everybody on Capitol Hill understands that this is not a spending bill. This is a budget reconciliation bill.” He stated that using reconciliation is necessary to bypass the 60-vote threshold in the Senate due to opposition from Democrats.
Johnson reiterated collaboration with various committees in developing this legislation over more than a year. He highlighted its importance for maintaining tax cuts beyond December and fostering economic growth through policy changes aimed at reducing financial burdens on job creators and industries like energy.
