Speaker Johnson issued a statement following the House Republicans’ decision to overturn a resolution by the D.C. City Council that allowed noncitizens to vote in local elections. The decision saw 148 House Democrats voting in favor of allowing noncitizens, including foreign adversaries, to participate in elections within the nation’s capital.
Johnson stated, “Only American citizens should decide the outcome of American elections. Yet the D.C. City Council has made it clear they actually want noncitizens and even foreign actors to have an equal say in choosing a mayor and other local public officials in our nation’s capital.” He emphasized that as the constitutional authority overseeing the District, House Republicans are opposed to what he termed an “un-American decision.”
The Speaker further remarked, “This should have been a decisive and bipartisan vote to overturn the Council’s reckless resolution and reaffirm a basic principle that the vast majority of American voters support: to ensure only American citizens can vote in American elections.” Johnson criticized 148 House Democrats for their stance, suggesting it invites foreign influence into U.S. elections and undermines democratic principles.
He also highlighted recent legislative efforts by House Republicans, mentioning the passage of the SAVE Act as part of measures aimed at protecting election integrity. Johnson urged swift action from the Senate to advance this bill.
