Speaker Johnson and Representative Pfluger have expressed their approval following the House’s passage of H.R. 881, titled The Department of Homeland Security Restrictions on Confucius Institutes and Chinese Entities of Concern Act. This legislation aims to address concerns about foreign influence in American educational institutions.
Speaker Johnson emphasized the importance of keeping higher education in the United States free from foreign influence, particularly from adversarial regimes like the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). “House Republicans will not tolerate adversarial regimes, like the Chinese Communist Party, using propaganda to manipulate students, undermine academic institutions, and compromise national security,” he stated. He also praised Representative Pfluger for his efforts in ensuring that taxpayer money is not used to support institutions associated with Confucius Institutes or entities aligned with CCP interests.
Representative Pfluger highlighted the CCP’s actions as detrimental to American interests. “The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has proven to be an untrustworthy, adversarial actor by continually undermining American interests at every turn – in no world should they have a front-row seat in our classrooms funded by our own taxpayer dollars,” he remarked. Pfluger believes that this legislation sends a strong message that U.S. universities and research facilities will no longer serve as platforms for activities such as espionage or recruitment benefiting the CCP.
The passage of this bill is seen by its proponents as a step towards safeguarding national security and protecting future generations from foreign influence within academic settings.
