House Republicans and Democrats showed a clear division over the recently passed Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. According to Speaker Johnson, the legislation seeks to secure the voting process by mandating proof of citizenship for new voter registrations, a measure he describes as a guarantee that “only American citizens should vote in American elections.”

Speaker Johnson responded sharply after 208 House Democrats voted against the measure, indicating their support for noncitizens to have the ability to vote in federal elections. He noted that “House Republicans stood united with the millions of legal American voters who want their voices heard – and protected – at the ballot box.”

The passage of the SAVE Act has reignited the debate over voting rights and citizen participation in elections, reflecting broader partisan differences on the issue.
