Today, the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon took place in the Rayburn Room of the U.S. Capitol. Speaker Johnson hosted President Donald Trump and Taoiseach Micheal Martin for this St. Patrick’s Day tradition that started in 1983.
The event included remarks from Speaker Johnson, President Trump, and Taoiseach Martin, alongside a performance by the Riverdance Irish Dance troupe.
Following the luncheon, Speaker Johnson and Taoiseach Martin held a bilateral meeting to discuss the relationship between the United States and Ireland.
In his speech, Speaker Johnson highlighted the significant contributions of Irish Americans to American history: “Irish men and women have taken up arms among American soldiers, they’ve made unmatched contributions to music and literature and the arts, and they punch well above their weight in American government.”
He noted historical figures such as John Barry, an Irishman who played a pivotal role during the American Revolution. “We had three Irishmen who signed our Declaration of Independence: George Taylor, Matthew Thornton, and James Smith,” he added.
Speaker Johnson emphasized that many U.S. Presidents have Irish heritage: “23 of the 45 men who have served as United States President have Irish heritage.” He also reflected on the luncheon’s origins: “In 1981, Senator Ted Kennedy, Senator Daniel Moynihan and Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill started this great tradition.”
Johnson remarked on past political unity at these events: “Last year I hosted this luncheon alongside President Biden… we shared laughs at the table at this event.” This year sees a different political landscape with President Trump back in office and Republicans controlling Congress.
He concluded by introducing President Trump: “So, in keeping with the proud US-Ireland tradition… it is my great privilege to present… Donald J. Trump.”
