The debate over the future of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified as Democrats call for its defunding and dismantling. This comes amid claims from Republican leaders that ICE plays a crucial role in deporting criminals, including murderers and gang members, thus enhancing community safety.

Speaker Johnson criticized Democrats, stating, “While Republicans are supporting the men and women of ICE through the One Big Beautiful Bill, Democrats are fighting for illegal aliens and against law enforcement agents. They’re defending the violent anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles.” He further accused Democratic representatives of visiting a known gang member in El Salvador and clashing with ICE officers in Newark.

Prominent Democrats have voiced their opposition to ICE. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez described it as a “rogue agency,” while Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries warned that ICE agents attempting to conceal their identities would eventually be identified. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz likened Trump’s policies to those of a “modern-day gestapo.”

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu expressed skepticism about masked officers, comparing them to other groups known for wearing masks. Rep. Norma Torres bluntly stated her position with “ICE, get the f*** out of L.A.” Meanwhile, Rep. Kamlager-Dove labeled current immigration enforcement as “domestic terrorism.”

The Department of Homeland Security reports a significant increase in assaults on ICE agents, attributing this rise partly to activist rhetoric inspired by such statements.

In response, Republicans have introduced the One Big Beautiful Bill aimed at bolstering border security and interior enforcement with an investment exceeding $150 billion. The bill proposes expanding detention capacity with $45 billion allocated for this purpose and includes provisions for hiring additional personnel across various agencies involved in immigration enforcement.

Additionally, it offers financial incentives such as $10,000 bonuses for Border Patrol and ICE agents and funds for transportation to support removals.
